introducing weebeasts
Micah Linton's
Beast of a Dream
Let me speak of the wonderful world of weebeastology,
the study and lore of weebeasts as presented by Micah Linton.
....
One might think these slim volumes of sly, humanoid illustrations are
devised for children, and they are – and for anyone who ever was a kid.
Among the many surprises in these books is the complete lack of exposition. After a nanosecond of confusion
looking for “the story,” another layer of brilliance
pops out: One gets to look at these wildly inspiring
pictures and invent an original and personal adventure.
And another and another with every visit to the images.
And what images they are: Combinations of primary
colors and haunted woods noir. Intricate detail
splashed on minimalist backgrounds.
Pictures hidden in a deceptively simple silhouette. There is the juxtaposition of fantasy and science, if you acknowledge Darwin as a scientist – and if you can imagine that just maybe some of us might have evolved from birds instead
of apes, which is not a big leap here.
I’ll bet anyone will recognize an Uncle Leo or Grandpa
Joe in the creatures cavorting through these pages.
These books are a delight, the sort of fun that makes
a person laugh, smile, point, find, and shriek with glee.
