"Joel Bloom Square"
July 1, 2007
An official City of Los Angeles heritage designation sign has been installed on the south side of Traction between 3rd and Hewitt, offically calling the corner of Traction and 3rd 'Joel Bloom Square'.

The sign honors Joel Bloom, a long time Arts District community activist. As the owner of Blooms General Store at the corner of Traction and Hewitt, the store has served as a gateway to the community for many years. Joel was often the first person many people met as they ventured east of Alameda to discover the Arts District.

The sign reads "Joel Bloom Square, Arts District Pioneer & Activist." Thanks to 9th Council District Councilwoman Jan Perry and the City of Los Angeles for their quick action with sign fabrication and installation. Mr. Bloom continues to fight for his life struggling from a long public battle with cancer.

Much has and is being written and published.
Included below are links to follow on a few of the best.

Bloom, We are missing you!

Joel raised the stakes for all of us on what it is
to be a community supporter.
He went to every meeting that affected the neighborhood,
never assuming someone else would take care of things,
he knew everything had to be fought for, in person.

Bloom's General Store was at the heart of his understanding
about what a community really needs, not only as a place
where you can get basic necessities, but as a forum
for chance meetings and informal conversations,
about what is really going on.

He knew it was these chance meetings that make for long
lasting community ties, this is where his wisdom from
improv theater, activism and just running a store intersected.
He taught us all so much, the loss of him
will resonate for a long, long time.
