RESOLUTION
Joel Bloom
Community Activist
WHEREAS, Joel Bloom has served the citizens of the Arts District
and the City of Los Angeles through his tireless efforts to preserve,
promote and enrich his community; and
WHEREAS, during
his many years of voluntary service, Bloom fought to bring light
rail projects to downtown neighborhoods, arranged for DASH service
in the Arts District, fiercely advocated affordable housing, organized
one of the most effective neighborhood watch projects in the city,
was an architect of one downtown neighborhood council and served
with distinction on another and helped forge a community betterment
association that became an effective voice for preserving and
promoting the best qualities in his community; and
WHEREAS, during
his tenure as the "Unofficial Mayor of the Arts District"
he sacrificed countless hours to attend hearings and meetings
and to be a vocal participant in forums throughout the city at
which he aggressively represented the interests of his community,
resulting in safer streets, a greener neighborhood and a more
affordable home to renters and a more prosperous environment for
business, and;
WHEREAS, he
has served not only his community but his country with distinction
as a veteran of the War in Vietnam and as a transplanted Chicagoan,
lifelong Cubs fan and a talented member of the Second City who
raised the term 'grumpiness' to an art form of Falstaffian proportions
celebrated in song and local legend; and
WHEREAS, Joel
Bloom has served as a model for civic responsibility and through
his service has proved that the efforts of a single citizen can
be a profound force for humane change in the evolution of a great
city;
THEREFORE,
be it resolved that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los
Angeles City Council does hereby commend Joel Bloom for his service
to community, city and country and celebrates his life, works
and days.
