RESOLUTION
Joel Bloom
Community Activist

WHEREAS, Joel Bloom has served the citizens of the Arts District and the City of Los Angeles through his tireless efforts to preserve, promote and enrich his community; and

WHEREAS, during his many years of voluntary service, Bloom fought to bring light rail projects to downtown neighborhoods, arranged for DASH service in the Arts District, fiercely advocated affordable housing, organized one of the most effective neighborhood watch projects in the city, was an architect of one downtown neighborhood council and served with distinction on another and helped forge a community betterment association that became an effective voice for preserving and promoting the best qualities in his community; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as the "Unofficial Mayor of the Arts District" he sacrificed countless hours to attend hearings and meetings and to be a vocal participant in forums throughout the city at which he aggressively represented the interests of his community, resulting in safer streets, a greener neighborhood and a more affordable home to renters and a more prosperous environment for business, and;

WHEREAS, he has served not only his community but his country with distinction as a veteran of the War in Vietnam and as a transplanted Chicagoan, lifelong Cubs fan and a talented member of the Second City who raised the term 'grumpiness' to an art form of Falstaffian proportions celebrated in song and local legend; and

WHEREAS, Joel Bloom has served as a model for civic responsibility and through his service has proved that the efforts of a single citizen can be a profound force for humane change in the evolution of a great city;

THEREFORE, be it resolved that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby commend Joel Bloom for his service to community, city and country and celebrates his life, works and days.
